My name is Shelley Hawkey and I live in El Cajon near San Diego California

I have made many things over the years but never got as much pleasure from them as I do from creating my dolls.

It all started when trying to illustrate a children's story that my Grandfather had written.
I had tried painting the illustrations and then used colored pencil on paper but I just wasn't satisfied.
Then I tried cloth.I didn't want to use someone else's pattern so it took some trial and error but then came
Gabriel and it all fell into place. Each doll took on a life and a personality of it's own.

I owe my discovery of doll making to two people
Tony Hubble who gave me a gift card  for a book store as a Christmas gift and Patti Medaris Culea.
It was her book 'Creative Cloth Doll Making' that I purchased with the card.
Although I've never made one of her patterns (or anyone else's) her book did push me in the right direction.
From there I started surfing the web and found FOCD
Everyone was so awesome and helpful answering all my of questions. I knew I was in the right place.

I was lucky enough to have been born into a very creative and loving family. My Grandfather wrote wonderful stories,
my Grandmother was amazing with both a sewing machine and her needlecraft and my Father is a gifted craftsman.
But the person I am most proud of is my Mother. Among many talents, she is an artist with paint.
She has the misfortune of being stricken with Multiple Sclerosis and has lost the use of her right hand
but has learned to use the left so that she can still create her art. Her style has changed only slightly
from right to left and is always excellent. I am extremely proud of her.

Without my wonderful family I couldn't do any of it. My husband is my 'Office Manager' and takes care of all the paperwork,
taxes  and banking involved. Without him I couldn't do any of it because I am all about 'Making the Dolls'.
My daughters my parents and all my beautiful friends are always encouraging me and giving me strength to succeed.

When I'm not working on dolls or at work, you can bet that we are out somewhere playing in our Jeep
with our wonderful group of friends.

Pattern Note

For those of you that have purchased my patterns, you know that I love lot's of colored photos which are usually on both sides of the pattern cover.
Because of the outragouse  price of color copies I had to make a choice, either raise my prices or change my patterns.
I decided that I would change my patterns. Because I am now printing just one full side (front and back) covers, I am and will be putting more photos of
the dolls on my web-site. This way you will actually get even more and better pictures that you can in-large by just clicking on for more detail.
I hope that this is a benefit to you and not an inconvenience.
